Microsoft OneDrive for Business December 2015 Product Updates

Major updates for the OneDrive for Business Platform

Storage plans

Office 365 customers on our premium Enterprise, Government and Education plans will receive OneDrive for Business unlimited storage. Specifically, this includes unlimited storage for individuals in organizations with more than five people subscribing to one of the following plans:
  • Office 365 Enterprise E3, E4 and E5
  • Office 365 Government E3, E4 and E5
  • Office 365 Education
  • OneDrive for Business Plan 2 and SharePoint Online Plan 2
We will begin rolling out increased storage to these customers by the end of this month, starting with an automatic increase from 1 TB to 5 TB per user. We expect this rollout to complete by the end of March 2016. After this point, customers who want additional storage can request it as needed by contacting Microsoft support.
Customers on all other Office 365 Enterprise, Business and standalone plans that include OneDrive for Business will continue to receive 1 TB of storage per user. While customers on these plans will not receive the full unlimited benefit, we expect it will serve the vast majority of users. Today, most OneDrive for Business users consume significantly less than 1 TB.
Overall, we have taken too long to provide an update on our storage plans around OneDrive for Business. We also recognize we are disappointing customers who expected unlimited storage across every Office 365 plan, and I want to apologize for not meeting your expectations. We are committed to earning your business every day by delivering a great productivity and collaboration service and improving our communication approach.

Next Generation Sync Client for Windows and Mac

After a successful preview program, we are happy to report that the OneDrive for Business Next Generation Sync Client is now available for deployment. Our top priorities for this release were improved reliability and performance, as well as delivering core capabilities such as selective sync, support for large files up to 10 GB in size and removing the 20,000 file sync limit. For IT Professionals, we’ve provided the ability to silently deploy and configure the client on behalf of your end users. The OneDrive for Business Next Generation Sync Client is available for Windows 7, 8 and 10 (8.1 support will be added in the first quarter of 2016) and Mac OS X 10.9 and above. The Windows client is available today with the Mac client being available before the end of December 2015.
With this first release, the Next Generation Sync Client supports OneDrive for Business only, but we will add support for SharePoint document libraries in future releases. In the interim, if customers require sync for both OneDrive for Business and SharePoint document libraries, the Next Generation Sync Client is designed to work side-by-side with the existing sync client.
Additionally, we are actively working on other important features including Office integration to support the co-authoring of documents and sharing scenarios (planned for the second quarter of 2016), as well as a more seamless experience for users who are migrating from the existing sync client (planned for the first quarter of 2016). Go here to learn more and get started.

Big changes to OneDrive Storage......not for the better

OneDrive storage plans change in pursuit of productivity and collaboration

We’re making changes to OneDrive storage plans for consumers and are committed to making this transition as smooth as possible.
Since we started to roll out unlimited cloud storage to Office 365 consumer subscribers, a small number of users backed up numerous PCs and stored entire movie collections and DVR recordings. In some instances, this exceeded 75 TB per user or 14,000 times the average. Instead of focusing on extreme backup scenarios, we want to remain focused on delivering high-value productivity and collaboration experiences that benefit the majority of OneDrive users.
Here are the changes:
  • We’re no longer planning to offer unlimited storage to Office 365 Home, Personal, or University subscribers. Starting now, those subscriptions will include 1 TB of OneDrive storage.
  • 100 GB and 200 GB paid plans are going away as an option for new users and will be replaced with a 50 GB plan for $1.99 per month in early 2016.
  • Free OneDrive storage will decrease from 15 GB to 5 GB for all users, current and new. The 15 GB camera roll storage bonus will also be discontinued. These changes will start rolling out in early 2016.
We’re taking the following steps to make this transition as easy as possible for customers:
  • If you are an Office 365 consumer subscriber and have stored in excess of 1 TB, you will be notified of this change and will be able to keep your increased storage for at least 12 months.
  • If you are an Office 365 consumer subscriber and find that Office 365 no longer meets your needs, a pro-rated refund will be given. Click here to learn more.
  • If you are using more than 5 GB of free storage, you will continue to have access to all files for at least 12 months after these changes go into effect in early 2016. In addition, you can redeem a free one-year Office 365 Personal subscription (credit card required), which includes 1 TB of OneDrive storage.
  • Current customers of standalone OneDrive storage plans (such as a 100 or 200 GB plans) are not affected by these changes.
OneDrive has always been designed to be more than basic file storage and backup. These changes are needed to ensure that we can continue to deliver a collaborative, connected, and intelligent service. They will allow us to continue to innovate and make OneDrive the best option for people who want to be productive and do more.
Additional information can be found at the FAQ, and we will continue to update it throughout the transition.

Attachments in Outlook 2016—ready for collaboration

Tired of digging around for the file you want to attach when you were just working on it earlier? Tired of later trying to sift through emails to find links shared with you? With the Windows release of Outlook 2016, attachments just got a whole lot better. You can now skip the hassles associated with finding and sharing files, regardless of whether you were working on them on your computer, phone or tablet.

The next time you go to attach a file to your email, the first thing you’ll notice is a list of recently accessed documents under the Recent Items. The Recent Items list is comprised of documents on your local hard drive as well as OneDrive, OneDrive for Business and SharePoint—making it simple to pick files you have accessed across any of your devices.
Attachments in Outlook 2016 - 1
If you can’t find what you were looking for in the Recent Items list, we make it easy to navigate to your OneDrive, OneDrive for Business and SharePoint locations by selecting Browse Web Locations. To find other files saved on your PC, choose the Browse this PC option to open File Explorer.
If you select a OneDrive, OneDrive for Business or SharePoint file to share, Outlook’s new attachment feature shows you what permissions you’re granting to your recipients at a glance. Of course, you also have the ability to change these permissions or even attach a copy instead—all without having to go to where it’s stored.
When you send your email, Outlook does the work of granting everyone the right set of permissions behind the scenes. Additionally, because the OneDrive, OneDrive for Business or SharePoint links now appear side-by-side with your other attachments, you’ll notice a paperclip associated with them and have the ability to search for them just as you do with attachments today.
This new attachment experience is available today for users of Outlook 2016 on Windows devices, while continuous improvements and new features will be delivered to Office 365 subscribers. The best way to get the latest features with Office is to subscribe to Office 365. If you aren’t already taking advantage of the new experience, give it a try with your next attachment!

Automatically save screenshots to OneDrive for free

Automatically save screenshots to OneDrive

If you have OneDrive on your PC, and you capture a screenshot, you might be asked if you want to automatically save your screenshots to OneDrive. Here are answers to some common questions about this:

What will happen when I save screenshots?

They'll still be saved to your Clipboard as before, so you can immediately paste them. They'll also be saved to the "OneDrive/Pictures/Screenshots" folder on your PC and automatically uploaded to your online storage. You can get to the folder in File Explorer by opening OneDrive in the left folder pane.

How much does it cost to store files in OneDrive?

You get free storage with OneDrive and can buy more storage if you need it. Most people are surprised by how much they can fit in their free OneDrive storage. If you use a metered Internet connection, data rates will apply. See the next section for more info about minimizing your connection charges.

Will my screenshots upload right away?

Yes, if you're connected to the Internet. If you want to take screenshots that you don't want to upload immediately, you can temporarily turn off your network connection before you take screenshots and while you make any changes to them.

When I add screenshots to OneDrive, how can I get to them?

You can get to them by going to the OneDrive website from any device with a web browser that's connected to the Internet. You can also get to them by using the OneDrive app on a device with an Internet connection. Get OneDrive apps.

Are there any screenshots I can't save to OneDrive?

Screenshots can't be more than 10 GB in size. Some kinds of content are also prohibited. For more info, check thecode of conduct. For work-related screenshots, we recommend using OneDrive for Business.

If I no longer want to automatically save screenshots to OneDrive, how can I turn off this setting?

To change this setting, follow these steps:
  1. Press and hold or right-click the OneDrive icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar, and then tap or click Settings. (You might need to tap or click the Show hidden icons arrow next to the notification area to see the OneDrive icon.)
  2. Tap or click the Auto save tab, and then clear the Automatically save screenshots I capture to OneDrive box.

Major overhaul of OneDrive for Buiness - includes selective sync

Microsoft have announced a major overhaul of their OnDrive for Business service, promising some much awaited features.

The following is taken from the OneDrive  Blog https://blog.onedrive.com/e.com/
Rock-Solid Sync
Starting today, we’re launching a preview of the next generation sync client (NGSC) for organizations. The preview client adds OneDrive for Business connectivity to our proven OneDrive consumer client. The new client (available for both PC and Mac) offers improved reliability and selective sync, as well as removing the 20,000 file sync limit and extending support for files up to 10GB in size (these limits will remain for the duration of the preview but be removed when we launch broadly). For IT we’ve also included the ability to silently deploy and configure the client on behalf of your users.
ODB Selective Sync
We want everyone to have a great preview experience, so we’re rolling it out in stages to manage high demand and to make sure the setup experience is smooth and reliable. We’ve set up a waitlist website for you to reserve a place for your organization. When the preview is ready for your organization, we’ll send you an email with all the instructions on where to download it and how to set it up. Learn more here.
Simplified browser experience
We’ve completely refreshed the browser experience, employing the best practices from our OneDrive consumer experience used by millions every day. The resulting browser experience is clean, intuitive and beautiful. A highlight of the new browser experience is the ability to switch between a list and preview tile view which makes it easy to identify key files. All of the key actions you want to take on a file or folder, such as preview, edit, share and delete, are conveniently located on the toolbar or by right-clicking a specific file or folder. This new browser experience makes managing your work files easier than ever. Learn more here.
ODB_web_refresh13
Enhanced sharing
You could always share your files with anyone inside or outside your organization, but now we’re giving you more flexibility in how you do this. We’ve added new sharing options such as letting people you’ve shared with invite others in your organization to the file or folder as well as the ability to set an expiration date on a sharing link when you need greater control. Learn more here.
ODB_new_odb_browser_experience_sharing_cropped ODB_new_odb_browser_experience_share_expiration
Mobile productivity
There are significant new enhancements to the mobile apps. Starting with Android, you will be able to take files offline! You can flag one or more files for offline access and then open these files when disconnected, ensuring access to your files wherever you may be.
ODB_new-mobile_updates_select_files
There are some cool new features in the iOS app as well! There’s a new streamlined way to trigger common actions on files (share, move, delete and details) simply by pressing and holding on the file you want to use. We’ve also added PDF annotations – the ability to draw, highlight and comment on your PDF files – directly in the OneDrive app.
ODB_new-mobile_updates_flower ODB_new-mobile_updates_pdf_annotation
We know great mobile productivity is essential, so you can count on us to keep adding features to all our apps to ensure you can do anything with your OneDrive files on your phone or tablet regardless of whether you are online or not. Learn more here.
Protecting your people and data
Of course, providing a great user experience is vital to driving adoption of any file sync and sharing solution like OneDrive for Business, but this can’t be at the expense of ensuring that IT can stay in control of corporate data. To help IT in this area, we’re delivering new controls to manage how files flow outside your organization, including auditing external sharing invitations and limiting which users can share externally. In the coming weeks, we’ll preview a feature that enables limiting the external domains your users can share with. Learn morehere.

New developer opportunities
We want developers to be able to build rich apps that integrate with OneDrive (both consumer and business). Previously we made announcements about preview support for OneDrive for Business in our unified OneDrive API. Today, we are starting to roll out this OneDrive API for production use. Learn more here.
Meet the new OneDrive for Business today!
Today marks tremendous progress but we aren’t done. With OneDrive for Business we’re all in to continue meeting and exceeding your expectations. In the coming months we’ll share even more about the innovation coming across every aspect of the service.
Get started today with the new OneDrive for Business and give us your feedback on UserVoice.

The new Visio is here—work visually

Visio is the industry-leading diagramming solution used by over 12 million users, and today we’re thrilled to share our latest innovations with you.
Visio 2016 makes it easier for everyone to define business processes, document best practices, visualize the future state of transformative initiatives and stay on top of operational insights. Using Office 365, you can share these Visio diagrams with everyone and communicate one version of the truth to drive organization-wide alignment.
Visio 2016 offers starter diagrams, hundreds of smart shapes, one-step data linking, Information Rights Management (IRM) for compliance and so much more. Working visually is now faster and easier than ever.

Get started quickly

When starting out, the new Visio offers a set of pre-crafted starter diagrams and contextual tips and tricks to help you easily create, edit and complete your diagram.
These quickly executable diagrams are available in 15 of the most popular domains (flowcharts, timelines, workflows, etc.) and will inspire and guide you from start to finish.
The new built-in Tell Me support helps you navigate more than 800 commands in Visio. Just ask Visio how to do something and the relevant commands are displayed in a simple drop-down list. You can execute the command just by clicking one of the options listed. Now even new users can leverage the full capabilities of Visio.

Be productive and compliant

Visio offers thousands of shapes that meet industry standards, including BPMN 2.0, UML 2.4 and IEEE (new). Whether you want to map out an IT network, build an org chart, document a business process, draw a modern floor plan or capture a flowchart from a whiteboard, the new Visio can help you work visually and stay compliant.
Here are some examples:
The new visio is here 3
One-stop process modeling.
The new visio is here 4 - cropped
Updated office layout template with modern style.
The new visio is here 5
IEEE-compliant electrical diagram.

Easily connect data to diagrams

With Visio, you can link diagrams to popular data sources such as Excel, Active Directory, SharePoint and SQL Server to display data on top of real-world visuals. For example, you could depict an assembly line in Visio and connect different components of that diagram to real-time operational data. Data-linked diagrams can update automatically and will display different icons, symbols and colors to reflect changes in the underlying data.
The Visio 2016 Quick Import capability now makes it easy for anyone to link data to real-world diagrams, plans and processes. With a single click, the new Visio can automatically identify the data source, import the data, link that data to shapes and apply data graphics. With one-step data linking, you can easily turn diagrams into dashboards and monitor progress or performance in real time.
Visio 2016 also makes it easy to swap out the graphics to your preference with a single click and make your data easily digestible.

Collaborate with confidence

More than ever before, our day-to-day work involves collaborating with others. This means sensitive information within diagrams requires new levels of protection. Visio 2016 now supports Information Rights Management (IRM) and lets you control document rights at the individual user level.
With Visio 2016 you can work visually, leverage data and protect sensitive information like never before. Experience the new Visio for yourself by starting your trial of Visio Pro for Office 365 now!

OneNote for Schools just got better!

School has started in most parts of the world, and the OneNote team has some exciting announcements to share! As we mentioned on the Microsoft Education blog earlier this month, OneNote Class Notebooks and OneNote Staff Notebooks are now available for Office 365 customers (teachers and faculty) around the world. We’ve seen OneNote Class Notebooks created in 95 countries, and Staff Notebooks created in 45 countries. More OneNote Class and Staff Notebooks are being created by teachers and staff every day!
We are listening to feedback from teachers and staff and improving Class Notebooks based suggestions from educators. Today we are happy to announce the upcoming release of two new capabilities, which are a direct result of talking to teachers and were also announced in our blog post back in May. We will gradually roll out these features to education customers over the coming weeks. We will also release these updates to Staff Notebooks in the near future.

Remove students or co-teacher permissions from a Class Notebook

The top request we’ve heard is to be able to easily remove a student’s permissions from a Class Notebook. When a student leaves the class, you can now quickly go into the Class Notebook app and remove that student from your class by clicking the Add or remove students tile. Removed students will not have access to the Class Notebook anymore. However, their work will still remain in your notebook, so that you can choose to archive it or delete it permanently.
You can also now remove co-teachers by clicking the Add or remove teachers tile. This will remove permissions of any co-teacher who had access to the Class Notebook.

Add student groups to a class notebook

Teachers are now able to add groups (i.e. class lists) of students to a Class Notebook. This allows a teacher to add an entire class by just typing one name into the Add students dialog—e.g. “Mrs. Smith’s Math class Period 1.” Previously, each student needed to be entered manually, so we hope this feature will save teachers a lot of time. We hope this will also help simplify the process of adding students to a class while leveraging work already done by IT staff for preparing class lists in Office 365.
We also support Active Directory Security Groups and Office 365 Groups when adding students.

Update group membership changes to your class notebook

Did a bunch of students join or leave your class this year? Not to worry! The Class Notebook app can now grab updates in group membership from your school directory. Simply click the Add orRemove Students tile and proceed through the steps. You will be able to preview the latest list of students in your class, and we will set up or remove their student notebooks once you confirm.

New languages supported

In addition to these two top features, we also want to announce that OneNote Class Notebooks now supports Right-to-Left (RTL) languages, including Arabic, Hebrew and Persian.

Office ProPlus: Current Branch and Current Branch for Business explained

What is Microsoft Current Branch, how does this compare to Current Branch for Business?
For customers who currently use Office 365 ProPlus, (the subscription version of Office apps for companies and organizations), you can continue to receive monthly feature and security updates just as you have been over the past few years. Moving forward, this always up-to-date approach is called Current Branch and means that you always have the most current Office apps and capabilities deployed. The next Current Branch will release on September 22nd and will have all of the new Office 2016 app updates included.
Based on feedback from many organizations running Office 365 ProPlus, I am excited to announce that we are adding a new option for updating Office called Current Branch for Business. If your organization typically waits a few months prior to rolling out a new version of Office or needs more time to test Office 2016 and your customizations between feature updates, this will be welcomed news.
Consistent with Windows 10 approach, the new Current Branch for Business update model delivers three cumulative feature updates per year, while continuing to offer monthly security updates. You’ll see the first Current Branch for Business build in February 2016—which is effectively the same feature set as the September 22nd release, but with four additional months of security updates also included. This tri-annual update model offers an additional way for Office 365 ProPlus to stay current moving forward. You can find out about the new servicing options on TechNet.

Great news!

Microsoft have just confirmed Office 2016 will be broadly available starting on September 22nd

Business with a a volume licensing agreement in place, you can download Office 2016 from the Volume Licensing Service Center starting October 1st.

Microsoft announce new partnership with Dell

http://news.microsoft.com/2015/09/08/microsoft-and-dell-partner-to-deliver-windows-10-devices-and-unmatched-sales-services-and-support-to-the-enterprise/

Microsoft Getting in bed with Dell makes the Surface a better bet than ever for businesses

There is no doubt that the Microsoft surface brand has gone from a quirky niche product to a real laptop alternative,  however there are still limitations.

Although Microsoft are hugely experienced in manufacture of peripherals and accessories, they are relative newcomers in the endpoint market.  A result of this is a limited channel model, with very few resellers able to sell the product, and poor after sale hardware support.

The lack of support is a major issue for business, who need a predicable, cost effective method for supporting and repairing their hardware.

To address these issues, Microsoft have announced a major new initiative to partner with Dell to sell and support their Surface devices.

This will allow Dell to provide the option of Dell Services, including Dell Hardware Warranty (up to 4 years), ProSupport with Accidental Damage Service, and Configuration and Deployment Services.

The quality of the Surface product combined with these services, makes the Surface device a much more attractive proposition.
